This poignant family drama unravels over New Year’s Eve 1992/93. Michal and Charlie (his Canadian girlfriend), arrive home to celebrate the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, only to find the family in chaos. Michal’s father has suffered a heart attack after damning evidence has emerged that he betrayed both country and family in cooperating with the outgoing regime’s reviled secret police. While the father’s health is left to the hospital staff, his place in the family hangs in the balance as the family members turn on each other debating their own reactions, their prior knowledge, and whether they can forgive their patriarch’s shocking past.
